Scott and Karuna together have over half a century of experience in holistic education and the healing arts. They created 5 Waves Learning to integrate the art of transformational learning with the science of wellness. They recently moved from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica to St. Augustine Beach, Florida where they teach yoga classes, workshops and teacher trainings as lead trainers in the Discovery Yoga School.
Karuna has a master's degree in education and over twenty years of teaching experience. She speaks five languages and has taught a variety of academic subjects, from preschool to adult education. She is a 500-hour Certified Self-Awakening Yoga® Educator, under Don and Amba Stapleton of the Nosara Yoga Institute, and has completed studies in Ayurveda and Bach Flower Therapy. She is in training to become a Yoga and Ayurveda Wellness Consultant and a Sophia Circle Journeys® facilitator.
Scott has a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in philosophy and education, specializing in "aesthetic" education, with over twenty years of experience as a university professor and professional development trainer. He has taught throughout the U.S. as well as in Hawaii, Europe, Asia, and Central America. Scott studied yoga with Amrit Desai (in the 1970s!) and continued studying with Deva Parnell and other senior Kripalu teachers. Practicing many forms of meditation including TM, Osho, Arican, Kabbalah, Zen, Surfing and African drumming, he also trained for over 20 years as an instructor in "moving meditation" with the School of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.
Scott is a longtime teacher of t'ai chi and qigong and is also certified in Supreme Science Qigong and Let Your Yoga Dance. He graduated from the prestigious Finger Lakes School of Massage, integrating traditional Eastern and contemporary Western healing modalities. As a lead trainer in the Discovery Yoga School, Scott teaches 200 hr. and 300 hr. teacher trainings in the Kripalu tradition as well as a variety of classes. He has been practicing and teaching yoga, t`ai chi, and meditation since back in the day, spanning four decades. Times have changed, but learning never stops.
