Scott and Karuna together have over half a century of experience in holistic education and the healing arts. They created 5 Waves Learning to integate experiential education with the art and science of wellness. They recently moved from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica to St. Augustine, Florida where they teach yoga classes, workshops and teacher trainings as lead trainers in the Discovery Yoga School.
Karuna has a master's degree in education and over twenty years of teaching experience. She speaks five languages and has taught a variety of academic subjects, from preschool to adult education. She is a 500-hour Certified Self-Awakening Yoga® Educator, under Don and Amba Stapleton of the Nosara Yoga Institute, and has completed studies in Ayurveda and Bach Flower Therapy. She is in training to become a Yoga and Ayurveda Wellness Consultant and a Sophia Circle Journeys® facilitator.
Scott has a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in philosophy and education, specializing in "aesthetic" education, with over twenty-five years of experience as a university professor and professional development trainer. He has traveled and taught throughout the U.S. as well as in Hawaii, Europe, Asia, and Central America. Scott trained as an apprentice instructor for over 20 years with the international School of T'ai Chi Ch'uan and is a longtime teacher of t'ai chi and qigong. He also graduated from the prestigious Finger Lakes School of Massage, learning to integrate traditional Eastern and contemporary Western healing modalities.
Scott has studied yoga with Amrit Desai as well as Deva Parnell and other senior teachers in the Kripalu tradition. He has studied many forms of meditation including TM, Osho, Arican, Kabbalah and African drumming. He is certified as an instructor in both Let Your Yoga Dance and Supreme Science Qigong. As a lead trainer in the Kripalu Tradition, he conducts a variety of teacher trainings for the Discovery Yoga School and will be teaching weekly classes for the GROW yoga co-op in St. Augustine. He has been practicing and teaching t`ai chi, yoga and meditation for over 40 years and is an avid surfer and waterman.
