Scott and Karuna together have over half a century of experience in holistic education, combined with a lifetime passion for the healing arts. They have created 5 Waves Learning to bring the healing arts to education, and education to the healing arts--integrating experiential learning with the science of wellness. They recently moved from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and are now serving as the resident managers of the Discovery Yoga Center in St. Augustine, Florida.
Karuna has a master's degree in education and over twenty years of teaching experience. She speaks five languages and has taught a variety of academic subjects, from preschool to adult education. She is also a 500-hour Certified Self-Awakening Yoga Educator, under Don and Amba Stapleton of the Nosara Yoga Institute, and has completed studies in Ayurveda and Bach Flower Therapy. She is in training to become a Yoga and Ayurveda Wellness Consultant, with Dr. David Frawley, and also to become a Sophia Circle facilitator, leading workshops and trainings on the Divine Feminine.
Scott has a Ph.D. in philosophy and education, specializing in "aesthetic" & holistic education, with over twenty-five years of experience as a university professor and professional development trainer. He has traveled and taught throughout the U.S. as well as in Hawaii, Europe, Asia, and Central America. As an RYT-500/ERYT-200/YACEP, primarily in the Kripalu Tradition, he has been assisting teacher trainings and teaching Yin Yoga, Chakra Yoga, Dynamic Gentle Yoga, and a Yoga Basics Training course (and facilitating drum circles!) at Discovery. He also trained as an instructor for over 20 years with the School of T'ai Chi Ch'uan and is a longtime teacher of t'ai chi and qigong. He graduated from the prestigious Finger Lakes School of Massage, learning to integrate traditional Eastern and contemporary Western modalities. He has been practicing and teaching t`ai chi, yoga and meditation for over 40 years and is an avid surfer and waterman.
